ENSEMBLE CONTRE ORGUE DE BARBARIE (ENSEMBLE AGAINST BARREL ORGAN)

Automated sculpture, performance and a series of collective writing workshops, 2023

ENSEMBLE CONTRE ORGUE DE BARBARIE is a song in progress that dramatises the artistic, economic and administrative system that governs the development of street music in the late 19th century. The piece refers to the system of the daily rental of barrel organs: these mechanical instruments do not require any musical knowledge to be played and used by the street musicians who widely disseminate the texts and popular laments printed by the song merchants, under the continuous surveillance of the prefecture and its gendarmes, who constantly administer and censor public musical expression.

ENSEMBLE CONTRE ORGUE DE BARBARIE follows on from the 10 collective writing workshops held in August 2022 in the Maisons de quartier of Bas-Belleville, Fosse aux Fraises in Bagnolet, Petit-Pantin and the Régie de quartier of the 19th arrondissement, during which “Le monde est méchant” (The world is a bad place) was composed, an experimental collective piece perforated and illustrated on a 20-metre long piece of card, which was widely played in the neighbourhoods where it was written.

ENSEMBLE CONTRE ORGUE DE BARBARIE is held in parallel with the Barbapapa exhibition (Candyfloss currently on show at the CAPC, Bordeaux), in which Mathis Collins is exhibiting “Animateur/Animatrice”, an automatic barrel organ which every half hour for the past six months has been playing Camille Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre on a loop on perforated cardboard.

This project is supported by the Fondation des Artistes.
