MuMo 2 : BODY TALK, Mon corps te parle…

BODY TALK
My body talks to you…
MuMo 2

An exhibition envisioned by the frac île-de-france for the Mobile Museum.

Curator: Veerle Dobbeleir

With works by Jean-Marie Appriou, John Baldessari, Dara Birnbaum, Jean-Luc Blanc, Bruno Botella, Ulla von Brandenburg, John Coplans, Julien Crépieux, Lola Gonzàlez, Joseph Grigely, Marie Lund, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Bruce Nauman, Damir Očko, Shimabuku, Thomas Struth, Zin Taylor and Erwin Wurm from the Frac Île-de-France collection.

Our body talks: whether a big talker or a silent ghost, it expresses itself in a range of poses, layers, sounds and gestures. Concealed behind masks, we provide different images of ourselves and invent new identities. Does our deepest self really exist or are we just characters that we embody, masks that we adorn for social interaction ?

Masquerade enables a range of role plays: spending a day in the shoes of the other sex; finding the beast within us like a werewolf; briefly appearing in the guise of a tree, flower, reed, bird or monkey.

Sometimes when we play with our limits and test our hidden powers, our own carnal shell can suddenly seem alien to us.

Often in the tension between self-awareness and lack of self-awareness we manage to recognise ourselves in others and pinpoint ourselves on both sides of this vague boundary between sense of identity and otherness.

As well as projecting ourselves into old age can we also imagine ourselves, if just for a brief moment, deprived of one of our senses – sight, speech or hearing – or one of our limbs – a hand, arm or leg?

By joining a group, changes take place in terms of our bodies, speech, gestures and in the ways we act. When we are in contact with others, can we stay the same?

By exploring the potential of their body, some artists take ownership of it like a tool and no longer reproduce it like an image but by changing it into an art medium in its own right.

Works in the exhibition Body Talk convey a multitude of body languages crying out to be heard. Stay tuned…

Initiated in 2011 by Ingrid Brochard, the MuMo is a mobile contemporary art museum aimed at children.

Since 2017, MuMo 2 has continued to provide arts and cultural education within France. Conceived by the designer matali crasset as a forum for sharing, the new version of the MuMo helps to circulate collections belonging to the Frac (Regional Contemporary Arts Fund), in addition to their dissemination activities throughout France.

From November 2018 to February 2019, the MuMo 2 will be touring in the Île-de-France region and meeting school and extracurricular groups, as well as inhabitants to provide courses, workshops, visits and meetings.
