Open letter to Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris
We have just heard that from 2018 the City of Paris plans to abolish its subsidy to the FRAC (Regional Collection of Contemporary Art) Île-de-France.
Artists, exhibition curators, figures from the world of art and culture, we would like to share our absolute disbelief with you.
The Frac Île-de-France put down roots in Paris in 2002 with Le Plateau and emerged as one of the leading institutions of contemporary creation in France. Increasing its activities throughout the region, it managed, through Le Plateau, to change this contemporary art scene in Paris, thanks to the support of the City of Paris, the state and the Île-de-France region. Withdrawing your support for Le Plateau runs the risk of it ceasing to exist.
This site, the outcome of an extraordinary civic battle driven by a group of residents from the 19th district of Paris, has brought to the forefront a number of artists and young exhibition curators who carried out their first major projects there. The work performed has very often paved their way toward international renown.
Efforts by the Frac Île-de-France at Le Plateau to showcase these artists and other stakeholders involved in creation, notably to Parisian audiences – those familiar with the domain, amateurs, as well as those deprived of cultural facilities– is furthermore exemplary. By increasing partnerships with other protagonists in the field of culture, national education and the social sphere, especially in eastern Paris to establish its status as a springboard for the ‘Grand Belleville’ artist network, it today boasts an excellent local foothold. Characterised by free access to exhibitions and events, its cultural mediation policy is considered a perfect example of its kind.
That is why we cannot comprehend or accept this very recent announcement and we urge you, Mayor Hidalgo, to reconsider your position, notably in conjunction with the two other major contributors, the state and the Ile-de-France region, so that the Frac Île-de-France is not cut off and can, with Le Plateau, continue to operate for the benefit of Parisians.
