Garance Früh

Garance Früh’s sculpture and installation work maintains a fragile and tenuous link with questions of protecting, defending and caring for the body, using pre-existing materials that most often constrain, protect or clothe the female body. In this way, beads, hair clips, crinolines, corsets, underwear frames and turnings, as well as the structures of childhood cradles and childcare materials and utensils, are inflected, bent and adorned with various attributes, reflecting a paradoxical sense of self-generation and seduction tinged with muted violence. The milky softness of the fabrics, like that of the leather skins, contradicts their maximum tension in space, or their embrace of the form that guides them. Both shells and nests, Garance Früh’s sculptures give birth to rounded forms. Their eroticism is alternately hidden and revealed, involving us in a layered, clothed vulnerability.
