Noémie Goudal explores the successive constructions of our world while playing on those of the image. With elegant visual montages, she enables us to contemplate the permanence of earth movement.”

Jean-Baptiste Gauvin, L’Œil de la photographie, 14th October 2021.

Noémie Goudal’s landscapes allow us to examine the mental, physical and philosophical construction of a representation. Taking up scientific, anthropological and mythological theories of conception of our world, her work questions the objectivity with which the notion of nature can be developed throughout history.

Wielding the art of illusion, the artist meticulously constructs her landscapes in layers, leaving the means of her artefacts visible. In the tradition of Georges Méliès – who employed the medium of cinema in an experimental, theatrical and spectacular way – Noémie Goudal uses all the technical possibilities of the photographic process to better question the truth of the image and focus on the place of man in his environment.

Decantations, is a series of photographs presenting various views of a rocky landscape. The monolith seems to be gradually melting. Through a technical process of images printed on water-soluble paper, the rock is repeatedly mise en abyme within its own original landscape, unsettling our visual and conceptual understanding of the landscape.
